By all accounts, day one of AWO's third congress was a tremendous success. Participants were impressed by the warm welcome, excellent organisation and the sophisticated logistics available on the premises. The Congress was attended by several Arab First Ladies including, Mrs. Suzanne Moubarak, Spouse of the President of Egypt, Princess Sabeeka Bint Ibrahim Al-Khalifa, Spouse of the King of Bahrain, Mrs. Wafa Suleiman, Spouse of the President of Lebanon, and Mrs. Amina Abbas, Spouse of the Palestinian President. The Congress was also attended by a number of prominent figures namely the Secretary General of the Arab League, the Director General of the ISESCO, a large number of members of various Arab women organisations and NGO's. In their addresses, all the First Ladies hailed the outstanding organisation and welcome they received on the part of their Tunisian hosts and at their helm, Mrs. Leila Ben Ali. They also commended the role played by AWO in the promotion of Arab women and praised Tunisia's First Lady for the many initiatives she has taken as AWO's Chairwoman. Naturally, Mrs. Leila Ben Ali's opening address was the most significant moment of the inaugural day. Due to its wide ranging scope, breadth of vision and propositions, it drew the attention of a large segment of Arab media. (For the full address, see page 2)
