The Ministry of Equipment and Housing has allocated 36 million dinars for dredging and maintenance works on flood protection facilities across the country. Out of this amount, 8.2 million dinars have been earmarked for the Greater Tunis region, in a bid to boost its resilience against heavy rainfall and flood risks. Large-scale works carried out during the summer Between June and August 2025, the ministry's services dredged and cleaned nearly 2,400 kilometers of canals, waterways, and streams of various sizes, including secondary channels connected to flood protection infrastructure. Around 440 hydraulic structures were also restored nationwide. In Greater Tunis, rainwater retention basins now cover a total area of 52 hectares. Field visit by Minister Salah Zouari In preparation for the rainy season, Minister of Equipment and Housing Salah Zouari conducted a field visit on Monday to the governorates of Tunis, Ariana, Manouba, and Ben Arous. He reviewed the progress of maintenance projects, including the dredging of the stormwater drainage canal along National Road No. 9, the cleaning of retention basins, and the rehabilitation of key waterways such as Khaznadar Canal, the discharge canal for Sebkha Sijoumi, and outlets at Oued Meliane and Oued Sidi Slimane, as well as the water retention basin at Borj Etturki. The minister also inspected the Nour Jaafar stream project, part of the third phase of the Raoued flood protection program, which has reached 32% completion. He stressed the importance of meeting deadlines to finalize the works on time. Call for faster pace and stronger coordination Zouari urged technical teams to accelerate interventions, give greater attention to stormwater drainage networks along roads and related facilities, and intensify dredging operations in waterways and protective infrastructure, particularly in residential areas vulnerable to flooding.
