Human Rights Instaurations in Egypt Demand Ending the Legal Prosecution of al-Jazeera Channel and Human Rights Activists in Morocco Cairo on 2 July 2008 14 Egyptian rights institutions called on today to discontinue the prosecution of Al- Jazeera Channel in Morocco, and the Moroccan Center for Human Rights on the background of the al-Jazeera broadcast of a story about the violent clashes, and brutal repression practiced on the 7th of June by the Moroccan forces against the protests in Sidi Ifni area in South Morocco. Following to which charges of “disseminating false news” were directed to each of Hassan el- Rashidi the Director of Al Jazeera Channel Office in the Moroccan capital Rabat, and Ibrahim Sab'alil the president of Sidi Ifni Section of the Moroccan Center for Human Rights. Al- Jazeera Channel had aired a piece of news so did some other news agencies, that there were some deaths due to the violence during the police crackdown in Sidi Ifni city, the news was negated later by Al Jazeera following to the government assurance publicly that there are no deaths. However the Channel action was dissatisfactory for the Moroccan government who had referred each of Hassan Al Rashidi the Director of Al Jazeera and Hassan Sab'alil the president of the Moroccan Center for Human Rights to the court accusing them of “disseminating false news” offence, where the first court session was held yesterday, Tuesday 1st July, and postponed to Friday 4 July next. “ Finding the announced denial of Al Jazeera to the news unsatisfying, persisting to prosecute Rashidi and Sab'alil, proving the Moroccan government intention to proceed in decline that morocco had witnessed in the past few years, and resembles a return to the “police- handling” as trend to deal with journalism and Human Rights Activism. The brutal crackdown against the Moroccan journalism currently, which has extended to the Jazeera channel this time, considered as the worst since the King Mohamed VI had took over the rule of the country in Morocco July 1999, which is raising fears for morocco rule to turn into the same trend of the former harsh regime, that repressed all of the democracy advocating voices, diminishing entirely the signs of free and independent press.” said the Egyptian rights institutions signatory to this statement. Further to this, the Egyptian rights institutions affirm that Sidi Ifni incidents would not happen, except for the current economical hard conditions, and the fall in the living situations, and the sense of oppression, require more openness, and democracy not repression, press freedom constraint and human rights activists' prosecution. The recent crackdown against Al Jazeera channel in most of the Arab states, which raged this time by the Moroccan government, proves the sense discomfort of the Arab governments against this brave channel, and their rejection to its favoritism toward the Arab citizens and their rights to knowledge, and information reception, instead of the official media trend which always follows the governments and security agencies policies. The rights institutions in Egypt announce thier full solidarity with Al Jazeera Channel and its office in Rabat, and the Moroccan Center for Human Rights, confirming that the choice of the Moroccan government in pressing on the journalism and Human Rights Activism, instead of dealing with the real causes of the living conditions decline, and the sense of dissatisfaction among the Moroccan citizens, is a misguided choice, which will only contribute in the deterioration of the situation in morocco and lack of trust in the current governmental policy of applying the security solutions handling the journalism issues, instead of providing more of the civil and political rights in Morocco.
